As a long time dog trainer, Ann found a new passion with Nose Work and in October 2011, she became the first Canadian Certified Nose Work Instructor with the National Association of Canine Nose Work.
Since that time she has earned numerous Nose Work titles with her Cattle Dog, Keeper and her Nova Scotia Duck Toller, Spring.
With these dogs she has four NW 3 titles including NW 3 Elite and Elite 1 with her Toller. Spring earned the first K9 ABC Games Championship in History. Spring is also the first dog in Canada to earn her C-Wags SD ACE Championship. She is also the first Toller to earn her Sporting Detection Championship.
At last count, 14 of Ann's students have gone on to teach Nose Work themselves!
Ann has also trained her dogs to success in Obedience, Agility, Rally and Conformation. As an owner/handler, Ann handled her Cattle Dog to a Conformation Championship and an Obedience Trial Championship. In Obedience, Keeper placed first in all of Canada for Australian Cattle Dogs in 2008. As well, Keeper has three Rally Excellent titles: AKC, the CKC and CARO including his CARO Bronze Award of Merit. In agility, Keeper has earned his ATChC and his Silver Award of Merit. Keeper was honoured with a Versatility Master Championship from the Australian Cattle Dog Club of Canada on September 3, 2011 (The only ACD so far to earn this award). Over his career, Keeper has achieved 4 Championships and close to 100 titles. Spring, the Duck Toller, has 62 titles so far combined in Nose Work and Agility.
Patient and positive with handler and dog alike, Ann’s training style is to break down tasks into manageable pieces. Ann feels that this ‘scaffolding’ builds a confidence in K9s and their handlers that may be applied to every dog sport. She has a good eye for assessing where the team is and where they need to go next. Ann believes that, while each dog has different needs, all respond to positive step by step instruction.
As a life long learner, Ann maintains her professional development with regular attendance at seminars throughout Canada and the USA. In Nose Work and Agility, she has done 95 days of Professional development since 2010. Ann is part of the development team of K9 SSG and mentors trial officials for hide setting. Ann is also a Judge and Hide Official for the K9 ABC Games. She is a Trial Supervisor and Judge for SDS and a Certifying Official for UKC.
In the community, Ann volunteers her time to train the staff and volunteers of local Animal Shelters on how to use Nose Work to benefit shelter dogs. She also helps local shelters with education programs for the community. Ann is also one of the organizers for the SARC Scent-topia which is the largest Nose Work event in North America that raises money for the Surrey shelter.
